With her label Lyk Carpet, Mareike Lienau fuses an avant-garde design approach with traditional craftsmanship. The question „What is contemporary about craft?“ is fundamental to her design process, explains the industrial design graduate, who studied product and process design at the Berlin University of the Arts. „There is a vision, a passion, values that influence my design process. It is from this conglomerate that emerge the objects.“ All her designs are knotted in a Tibetan manufactory in Nepal from hand-spun and vegetable-dyed highland virgin wool. „I want my objects to bring joy to people – to add value, to encourage them to think about global responsibility, fair trade and socio-ecological aspects – not only because I care about respect for the people who produce these objects and consideration for the nature that provides the raw materials, but because „the story-behind“ of the objects connects us.“

„I want my objects to bring joy to people - to add value, to encourage them to think about global responsibility, fair trade and socio-ecological aspects.“

ABOUT . the story behind

... is now being heard
more and more.

The passion for the art of knotting developed when, in 2007, Mareike Lienau started learning about the background of this craft. „When I founded my label, I wanted to design products that met my high standards for social, fair and environmentally friendly manufacturing. This set of beliefs then led me to Nepal,“ the designer explains. There, she found a traditional Tibetan manufactory that works exclusively with Tibetan highland virgin wool – one of the best qualities of wool in the world – and produces her rug designs at the highest standards of manual manufacturing.

„The wool is obtained from live sheep, it is hand-combed, washed, spun and dyed using traditional pot dyeing, which is the process of dyeing in pots with plant substances such as barks, roots, flowers, indigo and fruit peel. The wool is then knotted by hand,“ says Mareike Lienau. The knot density is very high, with up to 100 knots per 2.5cm2. This benefits the material as much as the finished object. All wool objects produced under the Lyk Carpet label are natural and manufactured under strictly controlled, fair conditions with the highest respect for people, animals and nature. Thanks to the exceptional manufacturing quality, all pieces are unique and have an individual character.

ABOUT .  Label STEP . Fairtrade

Lyk Carpet thinks holistically

Modern design on the one hand and traditional craftsmanship on the other: Lyk Carpet combines both to create a high-quality, aesthetically pleasing end product. The design comes from Berlin; production takes place in Nepal. From product to company – the Berlin label thinks holistically and, in every aspect, operates in a fair, social and environmentally friendly way. As a partner, Lyk Carpet works with the non-profit fair trade label STEP, which is committed to the welfare of weavers and workers in the handcrafted carpet industry. This also applies to the working conditions and environmentally friendly product processes of the Nepalese manufacturer with whom Mareike Lienau has been collaborating since 2009. Founded in Switzerland in 1995, the STEP standard for fair trade covers general human rights, including the prohibition of child labour, safe working conditions, fair wages, and sustainable, environmentally friendly production – conditions that are a top priority for Mareike Lienau and her label.

„Viewing and experiencing a craft generates new insights, perspectives and enriches the exchange of information. I would like to invite the viewer to get to know a value chain and to think about global responsibility.“

ABOUT . LykColourSystem

... a handful of plants for a sea of natural colours

Plants, roots and bark are enough to create the 70 Lyk Carpet colours. Over many years of intense collaboration, Mareike Linau has developed and fine tuned the intricate LykColourSystem together with the carpet manufacture in Nepal. The nuances and colour tones of the natural plant dye are a masterpiece – visually and technically. This collaboration process also safeguards traditional techniques of the Nepalese dyeing craft for the future.

The lanolin content and the original colour of the wool – whether blonde or brown – as well as the outside temperature play an important role in the dyeing process thus leading to individual colours and shades. New shades of colours are created again and again, giving each carpet an individual character, without a single drop of chemical agents that could interfere with the carpet quality. In Pokhara, a town north of Kathmandu in Nepal, the wool gets pre-sorted according to its natural colour, then carded and spun, so that only the high quality long fibres are processed. Spun wool of this quality is well suited for the process of natural dyeing. Through the traditional pot-dyeing process, the fibres will not only be coated by the dyes but penetrated right through to the core. As a consequence Lyk Carpets are colour intensive and don’t fade. After sorting, all the following steps in the production process such as dyeing, knotting and the final washing of the carpets take place in the workshop in Kathmandu Valley.

ABOUT . bespoke LykObjects

... individuell angepasste Unikate

. Lyk Carpet gestaltet maßgeschneiderte Objekte als eigenständige Entwürfe, wie zum Beispiel das Sitzbankensemble Come As You Are.
